Serve 505: Giving a Hand Up to Families in Need

Posted on May 7, 2019 by Justin Serrano

Serve 505 is one of many outreach ministries of Harvest started by Alan Gray several years ago. Alan had a vision to serve our community by meeting the practical needs of our neighbors through a monthly food pantry. When Alan was called to serve elsewhere, however, he passed the baton to Anthony Gutierrez, who has been faithfully running Serve 505 with the help of Ann Marie Parmenter ever since.

The main goal of Serve 505 is not necessarily just to fill tummies, but to be a light and fill people with the Bread of Life. See, the Bible says, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). One of the best ways we can love our neighbor, is by meeting their practical needs in order to meet their eternal needs — whether through food to eat, clothes to wear or even a shoulder to cry on.

Once a month, several members of Harvest conduct a food pantry, serving on average anywhere from 50 to 100 families in need. As Harvest and the faithful volunteers of Serve 505 distribute food month after month, not only are they meeting a practical need, but a spiritual one as well. When people pick up groceries for their families, the volunteers of Serve 505 are ready and willing to pray with anyone who wants prayer or someone to listen.

In addition to the volunteers, however, Serve 505 wouldn’t be possible without the local partners throughout the city including Cross of Hope, Sagebrush, Roadrunner Food Bank, the Water Polo Team from Volcano Vista High School, and private donors. As a small token of gratitude, Harvest and the leaders of Serve 505 would like to thank all the volunteers and donors who have been dedicated to the ministry throughout the years.

We are called to serve, so serve we shall. —Anthony Gutierrez, Leader of Serve 505
