What is fasting?
Fasting is voluntarily reducing or eliminating your intake of food and/or drink for a specific time and purpose. A fast can be for a single mea, it can last for many days, or a combination of both.

Why do we fast?
We fast because we love Jesus and want more of Him. Jeremiah 33:3
We fast to make room for God's strength to be made perfect through our weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
We fast because Jesus fasted and told us to as well. Matthew 6:16-18

Tips to help you start well and finish strong
Set Clear Goals: Why are you fasting? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance on the purpose of your fast (desire for God, direction, intimacy, etc.)
Determine Type of Fast: Total, water, liquid, partial intermittent, etc. Optional addition of fasting habits, entertainment, social media, shopping, etc.
Prepare Physically: Gradually limit your intake of food and drink lots of water to facilitate detoxing.
Prepare Spiritually: Fasting is fueled by humility and repentance (Isaiah 58, Luke 18). Invite the Holy Spirit to search and convict. Confess sins, surrender, forgive when prompted.
Prepare Practically: Select a prayer guide, devotional or teaching series to follow. Schedule daily times of worship, prayer, and Bible study. Journal to record what God speaks to you.

What to expect while fasting
Expect Opposition: Donuts at the office, tension at home, headaches and weakness. Satan tempted Jesus during His fast, and we will be tempted too. Discouragement may come in like a flood, but recognize the source and refuse to back down. (Matthew 4:1-11, Ephesians 6:10-18).
Expect to Wait: Breakthroughs often come after a fast, not during. Don't listen to the lie that nothing is happening. Every fast done in faith will be rewarded (Matthew 6:18, Daniel 10:12). Ask for greater faith and the grace to wait.
Expect Rewards: "But when you fast...your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." (Matthew 6:17-18)
