Fear

Fear… a small word…. but one that elicits the biggest feelings or emotions.

I remember as a child I was afraid of the dark. I remember several instances growing up when I would stay up, after everyone else had gone to bed. Mostly I would stay in the comfort of my room with the lights on and music softly playing as to drown out not only the darkness, but the silence. Darkness was scary on its own for me, but when combined with utter silence it left me terrified. This stayed with me well into my young adult years.

I remember one evening I found myself at home alone, as a teen or young adult. I lived in a fairly large house that, in the evenings, provided a lot of creepy silhouettes and shadows when completely void of light. I don’t recall why I ended up in the middle of the house that evening with all the lights off, but I do remember the darkness and I remember the utter silence. I remember feeling the weight of it. It so overcame me that I remember shouting into the pitch black, breaking through the dead air. I know that in that moment the urge to scream or shout overwhelmed me. In my head, I was challenging whatever it was that was creeping in the quiet shadows to make itself known. Of course, nothing showed itself, and I made my way back to my room where the lights, soft music, and blankets offered the amazing protection and comfort I needed.

Fear can be so crippling! It can cause us to do some pretty crazy and seemingly silly things (like screaming into a dark empty room for no reason). There is so much of it in this world. Turn on the news, or hop onto social media, and you will find so many stories that could incite fear into each one of us, like the fear of Covid-19, fear of our country’s leadership, fear of not having enough, fear of the upcoming election, fear of vaccines or of the non-vaccinated, of climate change, guns, war … I could continue, but I am sure you get the idea.

Fear seems to be everywhere, and it makes one ponder, why? The Bible says

‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.’ 1 Timothy 1:7

So, if fear doesn’t come from God, then it is easily deduced that fear comes from Satan. Pastor Jason stated in the last couple sermons, “Fear is the weapon of the enemy.” Satan knows exactly what to cripple you with to keep you from following God’s call and will for your life. I am not saying we shouldn’t learn from some things that frighten us. We must ALWAYS seek out the truth. We must keep ourselves in God’s Living Word, so that when Satan tries to distract us with fear, we are able to proclaim God’s Word over our lives and move through the fear with the protection of our Heavenly father as our shield.

‘This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.’ Joshua 1:9

Don’t allow fear to cripple you so much that you miss your calling from our Heavenly Father. Don’t allow it to influence you to the point of making decisions that are not made from truth. Fear is a liar! Pastor Jason explained how it magnifies/grows so that you can’t see anything but IT! God is not scared though. He loves you so much and has so many great plans for you! And like the scriptures say, all we need to do is call upon His name, and He will give us His strength and peace.

‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’ Philippians 4:6-7

So…what are we to do when things seem to being shifting and going crazy? Find something solid. God is the strongest, sturdiest, and mightiest rock you could ever put your foundation on! Read your Bible. Keep watching Pastor Jason online! Wash your hands. Pray. Allow God to lift you up in victory over fear.

Remember—Jesus has already won, and His love endures forever! May God bless you with a spirit of truth, courage, and strength!

‘Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.’ Isaiah 41:10
