Recognizing God in the Little Things

Posted on March 19, 2019 by Justin Serrano

Many times we forget to acknowledge the gifts the Lord gives us throughout the day. If we really opened our eyes, however, I believe we would see more of His blessings than we think.

For starters, He woke us up this morning! I love knowing God wakes us up with a purpose for each day. For some of you, your purpose may be to read this for further encouragement on your walk with Him. Unfortunately, many of us get so busy in our day that we forget to “stop and smell the roses.” Simply put, we forget to recognize God in every detail of our lives.

For instance, when you get to Walmart and see a super packed parking lot, and get a spot near the front, that’s God. I can’t tell you the amount of mini happy dances I’ve done in my car when that happens. Furthermore, have you ever been wanting something really bad, and when you go to get it, it’s on sale? Have you ever been running late and run outside just to realize you don’t have to defrost your windshield today? Have you ever ordered Starbucks just to pull up to the window and find out a stranger paid for you?

All of these little moments that we may write off as “luck,” are actually God showing us how much he deeply cares for us. One of my personal favorites is the sky. I feel like we take the sky for granted. Did you know there are more stars in the sky than grains of sand on Earth? Isn’t that fascinating? God hand-crafted each and every one of those giant stars—and tiny grains of sand! How crazy is that?

And then there’s every sunrise and sunset: no two are the same. God is such an artist. Best of all, the same God that paints the skies is the same God who created you and called you a masterpiece.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. —Ephesians 2:10

In addition, we should also recognize God in our past. So many little things happen in our past that we forget to reflect and realize how God was shaping our future.

This happens so much with His timing. We often fret because His timing is not ours. In the past, we have worried about things that seemed like mountains, and now that we look back at those “mountains” we realize they were only molehills. Those things that seem so small and insignificant now, we should thank God for. If they had not happened, perhaps we would not be in this position today.

For example, if my class had not been running late, I could have been in that accident.

Did I fret about the class running late? Yes. Was it a small change of plans? Yes. Did God use that to keep me safe? Yes.

This is recognizing God’s hand in the little things. How many times do we stop and thank God for things, both good and bad? Maybe someone hit your car, but instead of cursing God for letting it happen, shouldn’t we be praising Him because our life was spared? Maybe your entire family came down with the flu, but it only lasted three days, compared to the usual seven days.

I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles. —2 Peter 3:2

Too often we focus on the glass being half empty, when we should be grateful that the glass is half full. If you’re anything like me, however, you tend to focus on the glass being half empty. Today, I’m praying that all of us get to experience the joy of praising God in every detail of our lives. Whether that’s staring up at the sky and taking in his beautiful creation, or being grateful that circumstances could have been worse without God’s divine protection.

So today, I encourage you to acknowledge all of the things God is doing for you. No blessing is too small, we should be grateful for them all.

I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. —1 Corinthians 9:23

Thank you, Lord, for each and everything you do in our lives. Forgive us if we don’t always acknowledge these blessings, but hear our grateful hearts today.
