Trail Life USA: Equipping Boys to Walk Worthy of Their Call to Biblical Manhood

Posted on January 29, 2019 by Justin Serrano

Trail Life NM 320 will join the ranks of over 800 troops established across the country in just five years, according to local troop leader Mike Pittman. Not too long ago, Mr. Pittman, a member of Harvest, approached Pastor Jason with his vision to start our very own Trail Life troop in our community. Trail Life USA is a national organization described as, “…a Christ-centered, boy-focused mentoring and discipleship program that partners with local churches to empower men to develop the next generation of character-rich servant leaders through outdoor adventure.” And their mission closely follows suit:

“To guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”

In 2013, the foundation for Trail Life USA was laid, and by 2014, it was launched with over 500 troops across the nation and almost 20,000 members. Today, Trail Life USA has over 800 troops with more than 25,000 members in all 50 states. Trail Life USA serves boys and young men from kindergarten to age 18, with four distinct levels designed for age appropriate development, starting with Woodlands Trail for kindergarten to fifth grade, Navigators for grades 6-8, and Adventurer for grades 9-12.

As Trail Life members grow and climb the ranks of their local troop, they receive awards and patches to celebrate their progress and accomplishments through activities and challenges like camping, hiking, fishing, gun safety, archery, raingutter regatta, model rocketry, astronomy, conservation and local service projects, just to name a few. Some members even go on to receive the Freedom Award, the most prestigious award to be earned as a Trail Life member. And although the awards for members are great, the rewards the leaders and volunteers receive from giving back to the next generation of godly men are immeasurable.

I wanted to start a local troop because I sense the real need to offer a program which teaches these young men life skills and offer them opportunities to learn about the outdoors. The male leadership will offer the role modelship and even become mentors. There are plenty of other organizations whose moral compasses are set differently. This program offers an alternative which is so desperately needed in this day and age. —Mike Pittman, Trail Life NM 320 Troop Leader
