New Year, New Me

Posted on January 15, 2019 by Justin Serrano

I am passionate about health and fitness. It is my desire to help others have a healthy body and I do that through my website by posting fitness articles and healthy recipes. Personally, I know that when my body is healthy, I feel good and enjoy life. The New Year is a time when people think about their health and make goals to eat better, exercise more, and lose weight. I don’t know if it is because of all the unhealthy eating that most did the past two months or from all the ads telling us to join the gym. Whatever the reasons are that people make these healthy goals does not matter, because it is always a good thing to take care of your body. In fact, the Bible even tells us to take care of our bodies.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. —I Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Some may wonder why God wants us to take care of our bodies. The way I look at it, is when we feel good, we can better serve God and do what He needs us to do, whatever that may be. As I was listening to the different speakers during the  six minute sermons at Harvest last Sunday, I thought about the saying Best Year Ever! One thing that really stuck out in my mind was to include God in my plans. I thought about how so many people have good intentions with healthy eating and exercising more. I also thought about how many people don’t succeed by the end of January. Every year it is quite evident at the gym that I belong to as it is super crowded in January and by February, the gym is quite empty. Maybe the folks at the gym forgot to include God in their plans. Maybe they were just thinking of “me” when they made the goal of getting healthy.

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. —III John 1:2 (NIV)

There is nothing wrong with wanting to take better care of your body as that is always a good thing. I look at my body as a machine, if I don’t take care of it or give it healthy food, then it is not going to run well. I also consider other things when it comes to health, like sleep, stress, and spiritual health. Looking at my spiritual health makes me think of the theme verse (John 15:16) that Pastor Jason selected this year as it talks about fruit. When I think of fruit, I think about how it is good for our body. It also reminded me to include God in my health plans, which means praying daily that He will help me make healthy choices—a reminder that I can do nothing without God. I realize that God made my body, so who better to ask for help to succeed in having a healthy body and a healthy spiritual life? I need to rethink and desire a healthy body so I am taking care of what God has given me.

What are your health goals this year? After you include God in your plans of health then you will be better able to reach those goals. After all, the Bible says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13 NKJV).
