Make it a Habit to Hide God’s Word in Your Heart in 2019

Posted on January 3, 2019 by Justin Serrano

Plenty of us have heard the saying that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. After a very brief amount of internet research, I stumbled across an article on a psychology website that says some habits may be formed in 21 days, if the habit is simple and the person is naturally predisposed to forming habits. However, it can take up to 66 days to form new habits, especially habits concerning lifestyle. It seems that the beginning days of creating new habits are the most important, and that after awhile, missing a day or two here and there shouldn’t derail you.

The beginning of a new year seems to be a perfect time to create new habits. We reflect on the year we are leaving behind and looking into newness, deciding on what we want to get rid of and what we may want to add. One of the additions I want to make is daily Bible reading. I know that it is important to have God’s Word hidden in my heart, because when the days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and the new year doesn’t feel so new anymore, God’s Word can be the fresh air we need to persevere. We also need to know God’s Word in order to be obedient to Him. We can’t obey what we don’t know, but ignorance does not equal innocence. We have God’s Word at our fingertips and we can make lots of excuses for why we don’t read it, but at the end of the day, we should all long to hear from our Heavenly Father.

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. —Psalm 119:11

If you decide to read through the Bible in a year, one of the first choices to make is what type of reading plan would work best for you. When I began researching types of reading plans for 2018, I realized there are far more options than I originally thought. This could have become a hang-up for me, because making decisions is not always a strong point of mine. You can find Bibles set up for daily reading (I even found a few versions at the local used book sale). You can use the Bible app and do all your reading on your phone. You can also find reading plans printed on bookmarks to keep in your Bible. I did a quick Google search for printable daily Bible reading plans and found more than enough options to satisfy my needs. I ended up settling on one divided into genres, because I liked the idea of skipping around the different books of the Bible instead of trying to read straight through.

Personally, when I am trying to create a new habit (or break an old, unhealthy one), I find it helpful to have an accountability partner. I need someone in my life who will make sure I’m staying on track, but not in a condescending way. Someone who can encourage me makes a huge difference when I’m trying to make positive changes in my life. Finding a Bible reading partner or even a group goes a long way to helping me accomplish a goal.

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. —Psalm 119:105

Regardless of the plan you choose or the type of accountability that works for you, remember why you started on this journey. The Bible tells us God’s Word is truth. It is intended to be what sustains us through the valleys, the low points of life. That’s why it is referred to as a lamp to light our path. Reading God’s Word will change your life, because you will grow closer to Him. When Abraham drew close to God, his physical appearance changed. This probably won’t happen to you, but the people who are close to you will be able to see a difference in you as you hide the truths of God’s Word in your heart. I hope you’ll join me on this journey. I think it will make 2019 the best year ever.
