Teen Challenge: Dispensing Hope, Making Disciples

Posted on October 2, 2018 by Justin Serrano

Sunday, we had the privilege of hearing Dr. Jerry Nance deliver a hope-filled message on Luke five. Jerry Nance is the president of Global Teen Challenge and Director of the Southeast Region for Teen Challenge USA. As Dr. Nance travels the globe for his work with Teen Challenge, he has the amazing opportunity to see firsthand the transformative impact Teen Challenge is having in the lives of people around the world.

For those of you who are not familiar with Teen Challenge, it is a global, faith-based organization helping people recover from drug and alcohol addiction as well as other life controlling issues. Founded in 1958 by David Wilkerson, author of the best-selling book The Cross and the Switchblade, Teen Challenge has had a fruitful ministry bringing  hope to the nations through the life-changing power of Jesus Christ, but there is still more work to be done.

As Dr. Nance said in his message, “Drug addiction knows no borders. It impacts lives everywhere.” In the US alone, there are approximately 174 deaths a day due to addiction. The devastation of drug addiction is a global epidemic that must be fought, first and foremost, with prayer.

Globally, 270 million people struggle with addiction, claiming the lives of:

  • 7 people a minute
  • 420 people an hour
  • 10,080 a day
  • 3.6 million a year

By the time you finish reading this post, approximately 21 people around the world will have lost their lives due to a drug or alcohol addiction. As we go to God in prayer about this matter, we have to remember who we’re fighting. And for many of us, the fight is personal.

Growing up, drug and alcohol addiction has affected many of my relatives, friends and neighbors. I’ve seen people overdose and have attended far too many funerals of people who have passed away as a consequence of drugs and alcohol. The Bible says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). But the thief doesn’t have the final say, as Jesus declares, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10)

With a foundation built on Jesus Christ, Teen Challenge is able to fulfill the biblical mandate to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19) as they work to put hope within reach of every addict around the world. As a partner of Teen Challenge, we have the opportunity to stand in agreement for our state, our country and beyond. Through organizations like Teen Challenge of New Mexico, I have hope that our own community will overcome the destruction of drug and alcohol addiction.
