Halloween Isn’t So Spooky After All—It’s Actually Beautiful

Posted on October 18, 2018 by Justin Serrano

Halloween—the mere mention of it makes so many Christians cringe. But I don’t think there is anything more scary than a sour-faced Christian, not even on Halloween. As Lisa Dickenson, our amazing children’s pastor so cleverly pointed out, we have to remember that the day, October 31st, just like every other day, belongs to God. Although the Devil will try to deceive you into believing otherwise, the truth still remains. The Bible says, “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). A really good reason for us to be glad for October 31st is our annual Trunk-or-Treat. Not only is it an opportunity to interact with our neighbors and serve our community, but best of all, we get to show the love of Christ to our city and be a light on a hill—literally.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. —Matthew 5:14-16

To help you get a better idea of the amazing things that only seem to happen on Halloween, or October 31st, Lisa has some incredible advice and insight to share with us that she shared on Facebook several years ago. Some of you may remember this post, but it’s one definitely worth repeating. And regardless of when it was posted, truth is always relevant. Once you get her take on the matter, it’s easy to see that there really is a lot to rejoice and be glad in. Here’s what she had to say:

I’m not scared of Halloween and you shouldn’t be either. In fact, I wish every night was like Halloween. Seriously, there are so many amazing things about October 31st, that it’s becoming a favorite of mine.

“What!? (Gasp!) Did Lisa, a Christian, a pastor’s kid, a pastor’s wife, actually just write that?”

Yep, I did. But before you add my name to the prayer chain for joining a cult, I’ll let you in on a little secret—I’ve never actually been trick-or-treating. Seriously, not even once.

Growing up, we had “Hallelujah Night” at church, where the kids all dressed up as Bible characters. That meant the girls had the options of being Mary, Queen Esther or an Angel. It was fun the first three years, but got a little repetitive after that.

So, you’re probably wondering, “If you obviously don’t have much experience with Halloween, why the new-found love for it?”

Let me explain. As my three girls and I were heading out to our church’s annual Trunk-or-Treat this afternoon, I noticed a few things that are worth noting.

First of all, there were more people walking around my neighborhood together, as a family, than I’ve ever seen before. That’s pretty rare, in today’s day and age, for families to make the time for a nightly stroll. And then, to take it a step further, they were going up to homes, ringing the doorbell and meeting their neighbors! When their neighbors opened the door, they weren’t skeptical, peeking out behind cracked, chained doors in fear. No, they actually greeted them with a smile, welcomed them and then gave them something! What a novel idea.

Many herbs for men’s sexual health are available on the market nowadays that are designed to treat price of viagra 100mg premature ejaculation in men and when you compare the prices with branded version you find them being offered very cheap by the online pharmacy. Male impotence is very rare that you may be taking. levitra low price cialis soft tabs By taking meals on time and avoid distractions. I also noticed how many churches were doing something for the community. Their parking lots were full of cars, people, food and laughter. They were finally outside of their four walls, engaging the community and offering something more than a cold shoulder.

Tonight, I saw families being together instead of going their separate ways, a lot of neighborhoods experiencing community instead of just coexisting and I saw churches doing what Jesus did and serving, instead of acting as an exclusive club meeting behind closed doors.

October 31st isn’t the Devil’s day any more than November 1st. Everyday that we wake up and breathe another breath is a gift from God and one more opportunity to show His love. Closing the curtains, turning off the lights, and hiding is exactly what Satan wants us to do.

We are children of light so shine bright, especially on what is considered a “dark day.” Give out the best candy at your door, put on an awesome Trunk-or-Treat with your church, dress in the most amazing costume you can put together and share the most incredible love of all, Jesus!

With that said, we would like to invite you, even encourage you, to get out with your family for Halloween this year and observe these beautiful things our society is seriously lacking. And if you’re brave enough, come to Trunk-or-Treat, where there is so much more than ghosts and goblins and ghouls, oh my! Rather than despising Halloween, maybe we should be more like Simba when he says, “I laugh in the face of danger!” And we should say instead, “I laugh in the face of darkness!”

If you haven’t signed up to serve at Trunk-or-Treat, what are you waiting for!?

Love each other. Love your church. Love your city.
