Discover Your Gifts, and Get in the Game!

Posted on October 9, 2018 by Justin Serrano

Have you ever wondered what your purpose is? Have you ever wondered where you belong? Did you know you were created to serve other people? It goes against what society and culture teach us, but it’s true.

I recently sat through a redesigned membership class of sorts at Harvest. The point of the class is to give people some background on Harvest — who we are — and to help people discover how they can use their gifts and talents to serve the church body. The leaders of Harvest truly believe everyone was created with a unique gift that they can use to glorify God and to complete the church. Our church is not complete without you.

This goes beyond your job or career. If you’re a teacher by trade, but you have a musical gifting, maybe you should serve on the worship team instead of teaching a children’s class. Who you were created to be in the church may not depend on what you do for a living. They may go hand in hand, but they could seem like polar opposites that somehow, God aligns.

Sometimes we feel overlooked or unappreciated, and those thoughts lead to believing that our role doesn’t matter, or perhaps it isn’t as important as someone else’s role. Your big toe may not seem very important, either, but without it, you would have great difficulty balancing. Every person who decides to serve their church family becomes a vital part of that church family.

In his latest sermon, Pastor Jason said it this way, “The world needs you, and the church wants you.” As a church, we want you to discover the gifts God has placed in your heart, to dream big dreams and see what God can accomplish through your obedience. We want you to develop those gifts and natural abilities, to find the niche where you can truly come alive and fulfill God’s purpose for your life. We want you to share your gift with others, to encourage others who may have similar gifts as you.

You see, we weren’t meant to just sit in a church on Sunday mornings getting fat as we get fed. We are meant to take what we’re given and give it away. We weren’t given gifts and talents to hoard them, but to share them. We share them to give glory to God, but also to benefit and encourage others.
