After years of persecuting Christians, there is no doubt that Paul was considered an infamous terrorist of his time, but he was transformed on the road to Damascus. Although the Bible never mentions if anyone prayed for Paul, I wouldn’t be surprised if the very Christians he persecuted exchanged their fear for faith in prayer for Paul. Another surprising conversion was that of Nicky Cruz. A top violent offender in New York City, transformed because one man, David Wilkerson, chose to pray for him and his gang. If we commit to prayer for the worst among us, there is no telling how God will transform their lives and use them for His glory.
The Bible says, “Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). So, instead of criticizing each other and focusing on the negative aspects of our city, what if we commit our hopes and fears to God in faith and lay our lives down in prayer for our friends and neighbors? In an effort to do this, pastors and congregations laid aside denominations, church affiliations and differences for Citywide Worship and Prayer at Calvary of Albuquerque on Sunday. Between powerful sets of worship, we prayed for the economy, crime and violence, childhood hunger, church unity and spiritual awakening.
For the believers who have been bathing our state in a river of prayer, however, these lamentations are nothing new. Every minute of everyday, someone has been covering our state in constant prayer through New Mexico Prays. Since it was founded by Brian Alarid, New Mexico has already seen major improvements to our economy, child welfare and crime, but we must continue to pray without ceasing. Like our local church leaders, let’s humble ourselves in prayer for the most pressing issues, from the most vulnerable to the most violent in our city. As we focus on what unites us, rather than what divides us, we can accomplish more than we ever dreamed.
New Mexico is in desperate need of revival and transformation. Our only hope is prayer. Unified prayer in the upper room preceded the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Will you join us in prayer? Will you stand in the gap for our state? –New Mexico Prays
The transformation of our city and state is something I have yearned for as long as I can remember and it gave me hope to join brothers and sisters in Christ at the foot of the cross for Citywide Worship and Prayer. It was one of the most encouraging experiences I have ever had in Albuquerque and I can’t wait to see what God is going to do through our earnest prayers of faith and obedience. It may take generations before this city sees the total transformation we long for, but I believe we are well on our way to the same light that confronted Paul on the road to Damascus.
