Your Church Can’t Reach Its Full Potential — Without YOU

Posted on September 27, 2018 by Justin Serrano

According to Ephesians four, we are to be equipped for works of service and as we all do our work we build up our church and each other. So why do many of us just sit on the sidelines, until its convenient or until we feel like it? On the other hand, maybe you want to serve, but feel like there’s not a place for you. As members of one body, however, there is a place in your church only you can fill. In fact, the body can’t function without you. We all need each other to accomplish the mission of our local church and the global church.

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” – Ephesians 4:11-16

Maybe there is something that has been churning inside you, but you haven’t got involved because your church doesn’t advertise the specific area where you would like to contribute. If that’s you, I would like to encourage you to inquire with your church leaders to see if your idea is something they would be interested in. Chances are, they haven’t thought of it, don’t even know they need it, or maybe even want to do it but don’t have the manpower. I’ve heard that if you see something that needs to get done, God probably wants you to do it. All you have to do is ask.

Take this blog, for example. I was happy to get involved in several of the areas available at Harvest. After all, I love wrapping gifts, serving others, and even planning or setting up for events, but I really wanted to utilize the gifts God has equipped me with in an area that was seemingly under the radar. When I brought my idea to start a church blog to Pastor Jason, he couldn’t be happier. And I have to say, it was quite amazing to see how hard everyone on the Harvest Team worked to get this started. From the time I “pitched” my idea, to this first post, it only took a few weeks to get the blog up and running.

As we are learning from the current series based on Chris Sonksen’s book Quit Church, we can see that these same principles apply. Simply put, we need every member to do their part in order for the body to function properly. Your gifts are not only meant to serve your church and the people around you, they are also meant to help you. See, your church can’t reach its full potential without you. Then again, neither can you. God has placed you at a specific church, with specific people, for a specific purpose.

“We are called to give our heart, prayer, love, support, faithfulness, loyalty, encouraging words, and positive attitude to the church that God has us at.” – Chris Sonksen, Quit Church

When we don’t utilize the gifts that God has given us for His glory, not only does our church family suffer, but we also suffer because we will never be fulfilled until we do what God has called us to do. Aside from that, serving others just makes you happy! So, I would like to encourage you not to put it off any longer. In fact, if you’re ready to get involved, the timing couldn’t be better.

Starting October 7, Harvest will be launching their newest class, Discover. Discover is designed for you to learn more about Harvest and how you can join the team of faithful servants in accordance with the call God has placed on your life. It’s the perfect way for you to get involved and start utilizing your gifts for the Kingdom of God. What are you waiting for? You and your church have everything to gain!
